Florentina Holzinger's Venice Biennale Installation Features Urine-Filtered Water Tank at Austrian Pavilion

On July 20, 2026, Thaddaeus Ropac gallery announced details of Florentina Holzinger's installation at the Austrian Pavilion for the Venice Biennale. The work includes two bright-blue porta-potties and a tank of water filtered from urine collected from those portable toilets, in which Holzinger is submerged naked, wearing a diving mask and breathing through a scuba apparatus. The water is maintained by a filtration system visible beneath the tank, as confirmed by publicity manager Giulia Messia, who noted the system uses urine but not solid waste. The installation was set to open the day after the press preview, during which plumbing issues at the pavilion were reported.

Holzinger’s urine-filtered porta-potties at the Austrian Pavilion are the kind of visceral provocation that defines the Biennale’s outer edge — expect fierce debate but thin collector interest.
