Otobong Nkanga to Receive Sikkens Prize 2026, with Solo Exhibition at Singer Laren

via Lisson Gallery

Otobong Nkanga (born 1974, Kano, Nigeria) will receive the Sikkens Prize 2026 on October 26, 2026, the Sikkens Foundation announced July 10, 2026. The prize honors an artist or collective pioneering in the field of color. For the first time, the foundation is also staging an exhibition for the laureate: Nkanga's solo show 'Humus Blues' opens at Singer Laren on October 27, 2026, and runs through February 28, 2027, featuring sculptures, textiles, drawings, paintings, photographs, and poetry. The jury recognized Nkanga for revealing the origins of color in earth, community, and life itself, aligning with the Sikkens Prize's mission.

Otobong Nkanga's Sikkens Prize win—awarded for pigment as political material—solidifies her position as the decade's most consequential color theorist since Anni Albers.

Signal of the Day

Bonhams' £1.86M Klontzas triptych record proves Old Master materiality still commands premiums when rarity and condition align.

The Week in Brief
The Pattern

Exhibitions dominate (22 of 41 stories), but the market pulse came from auctions: Bonhams' £9.8M Classics Week and Artcurial's €16M Monte-Carlo sale. London and New York remain central, though Aspen and Cali signal geographic spread without a unified thematic thread.

Looking Ahead

Today: Florentina Holzinger's one-night Bregenz performance. This week's anchor: Tate Modern's first major Ana Mendieta exhibition in over a decade, opening July 15.
