Good morning. Tom Sachs opens a faux Chanel in Chinatown — the Uffizi's €50M renovation counters with institutional heft.

Tom Sachs Opens Unauthorized Chanel Flagship in New York's Chinatown

via Thaddaeus Ropac

On September 9, 2026, Thaddaeus Ropac gallery announced that American artist Tom Sachs has unveiled a homemade and unauthorized Chanel flagship in New York's Chinatown. Located on Centre Street, the project reimagines Chanel's historic 31 Rue Cambon boutique in Paris, with the street now dubbed "Little Paris" by a nearby sign. The installation continues Sachs's practice of world-building through handcrafted sculptures made from everyday materials like plywood, cardboard, foam core, duct tape, and hot glue, following his multi-year NASA project Space Program (2007-present) and earlier Nutsy's (2003-2005), which linked Le Corbusier's modernism with McDonald's commercialism.

Sachs's Chinatown 'Chanel' is a provocation that tests how far a gallery can push brand appropriation before the lawyers arrive.

Signal of the Day

The Uffizi's €50M renovation is a bet on experiential tourism over blockbuster loans.

The Week in Brief
The Pattern

This week's 59 stories are heavy on exhibitions (31) and light on auction results (7), with aggregate sales just €1.8M. New York (12) and London (11) dominate, but the Uffizi's €50M renovation is the only seven-figure institutional commitment.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow Beatriz Milhazes's MASP permanent installation opens in São Paulo; next week Gabriel Orozco's 'Chronotopic' at White Cube Bermondsey.
